Breathtaking Rewire Outlet Controlled By Switch
I read a few posts regarding the same situation and tried to follow the advice given but i screwed it up.
Rewire outlet controlled by switch. Rewiring a switch controlled outlet along with the ground wire and the neutral wire a switch controlled outlet has two separate wires which provide the power. The black cable wire runs from the switch to the bottom half of the outlet. Once you do that take the black that controls the outlet and connect to the red with a pigtail that runs back to the switch where the red wire was connected.
This is convenient if you want to have a hot outlet to plug in a clock or other device that needs constant power but still control a nearby lamp with the wall switch. Rewire a switch to control an overhead fixture. To do this we use the receptacle as a bridge for the hot and common wires.
The white wire provides the neutral return from the outlet. Rewire a switch that controls an outlet to control an overhead light or fan. For both romex s in the receptacle box the black wires are wired to the brass terminals the white wires to the silver terminals and the ground copper wires are nutted together and attached with a pigtail to the receptacle itself.
For now i want to just focus on the outlet being i screwed it up. Turn the power back on and make sure that the outlet works properly by plugging in a lamp and checking to see that the light switch turns the lamp on and off. If so you will need to determine which black on the switch controls the outlet.
As promised i detail below how to modify this wiring setup with minimal effort so that the switch can. If not try the other receptacle as it s likely you switched around the black wires. That red wire goes to the outlets.
I have one outlet controlled by a switch. This setup is how our master bedroom was wired before i installed an overhead ceiling fan. If you desire to have the outlet to be on all the time then the wire with the constant power is connected to the outlet and the wire controlled by the wall switch is not connected to the outlet.
