Outstanding 2 4 Way Switch Wiring

Now don t let this be confused with where the switches are physically located in your home.

2 4 way switch wiring. A two way switch has 3 terminals. Also the same wiring circuit diagram can be used using 2 way lighting or two way switches to control electrical devices from two different locations. You have an incoming hot wire black going to one screw it does not matter if you use the brass or silver screw on the side of the 2 way switch and a black wire from the other screw on the 2 way switch going to the load light ceiling fan etc.

Also this example is just adding a single 4 way switch which will give you 3 locations to control your light. The black line wire connects to the common terminal of the first 3 way switch. As you can see in the pic below common wiring that goes in the middle is the common pin of two switches and the line l1 and l2 pin on both switches that carry the live current of the power source.

Two way switching allows you to control a light from two locations. Before proceeding an important component called a two way light switch is the main element of the 2 way switching irrespective of the type of wiring used. Here two 4 way and two 3 way switches are used to control lights from four different locations.

All that is required is wiring a 4 way switch between the 2 3 way switches. The switches can be physically located to your liking but you must keep in mind the ease of routing the wiring from point to point. When the first switch plunger moves down it makes the connection with line wire and then on the other side of the second switch is in up position making contact with bulb live.

Some 4 way switches may have the in and out pairs opposite each other rather than top and bottom. The white wires are wire nutted together so they can continue the circuit. Notice the black wire is the only wire that we are controlling through the 2 way switch.

As you will see most 4 way switch wiring is placed between the wiring of two 3 way switches therefore a 4way switch is installed with two 3way switches. A 3 wire nm connects the traveler terminals of the first 3 way switch and the first 4 way switch. It is a standard single pole switch with three terminals.
